AFRICA'S DATA DILEMMA: USING CONNECTED DATA TO FIGHT CRIME, VIOLENCE AND PROTECT OUR COMMUNITIES
Data alone doesn't solve problems. Connected data does.

Data alone doesn't solve problems. Connected data does.
Africa is collecting enormous amounts of data NIN, BVN, voter information, passports, birth records, SIM registrations, driver’s licences and more.
But the bigger question is: Are we connecting the information we already have to make our communities safer?
At UNAVAY, we believe organized and responsibly connected data can become a powerful tool in preventing crime and violence.
Imagine a properly governed system where:
- CCTV cameras use image recognition algorithms to identify persons, vehicles and suspicious patterns.
- NIN serves as a reliable foundational identity, ensuring that every citizen can be accurately identified and verified.
- Relevant databases can securely communicate, allowing authorized institutions to connect identity, telecommunications, immigration, financial, vehicle and crime-related information when legally required.
- Data analytics can identify patterns and connections that may help investigators detect crime faster, locate missing persons and respond to emerging threats.
This is not about giving everyone access to everyone’s data.
It is about secure interoperability, responsible data sharing, privacy, accountability and using technology intelligently for public safety.
Every citizen should have a reliable national identity, and government institutions should be able to verify and utilize relevant information without repeatedly collecting the same data from citizens.
We cannot continue moving from one agency to another, collecting the same information, while valuable data remains trapped in disconnected systems.
The future should be:
Data Collection → Data Connection → Data Intelligence → Crime Prevention → Safer Communities
At UNAVAY, we believe Africa can use technology not only to respond to crime, but to anticipate risks, protect young people and prevent violence before it happens.
The question is no longer whether we have enough data.
The question is: What are we doing with the data we already have?
